Back at Randall’s apartment, I texted Arlo that I wanted to meet with him—in person—as soon as possible. A small part of me hoped he would tell me he was still out of town and would be for a while. Or maybe he would just not reply to my message at all. Despite how certain I was that he was holding out on me, that he had important information that would help me against the ghost, I still didn’t want to do this. Expecting him to be honest meant I would have to be, too.

I would be crossing a new threshold, into territory I didn’t trust. I had never brought clients into my personal life, despite how much I invaded theirs, unknown to them. It was all for a good cause. Who else could treat their supernatural woes? But I had always drawn a deep line with how far our client-therapist relationship went.

Of course, no one had ever taken me hostage because of a client before, either. Rules had changed. Everything had.

My phone buzzed in my hand. I jerked in surprise where I sat on Randall’s futon, feet firmly planted on the floor.

Randall was off in the other room tending his battle wound.

I stared down at my phone, refusing, at first, to make sense of the words. With a sigh, I read his message: I can come now if you want.

Of course he would be back already.

Gritting my teeth, I typed back the location of a deli-bakery where to meet me in an hour, and then pushed to my feet. I sauntered down the hallway.

“I gotta go talk to Arlo,” I called toward the bedroom door.

It opened, and Randall’s head popped out. The blood had been cleaned off, but his face was puffy and bruised.

“Should I go with you?” he asked.

I raised an eyebrow. The last thing I needed was to make this a group event. I still had a business to run, even if I was doing a bad job of it the last few days.

“You just stay here and rest your pretty head,” I said with a grin I didn’t feel. “Keep your phone handy. Just in case.”

“On it, captain,” he said, and then slipped back into his bedroom, closing the door.

On my way out of the apartment, I tried to flick magic at the floor. A few dots sprinkled onto the carpet.

It reassured me for absolutely no reason.

When I arrived at the deli, the small parking lot only had three other cars in it. I didn’t know what Arlo drove, so I took a deep breath and straightened my hair, trying to look composed, before I stepped out of my truck. If he was already here, I did not want him to glimpse me looking as frazzled as I felt.

Inside, a tall statue of a dog on its back legs in a waiter outfit held a chalkboard with today’s soup-and-sandwich special. Beyond the statue, a half-dozen bistro tables spread out over the small interior.

A woman a few tables in sat with her laptop in front of her, and a donut and coffee to the side.
